ARTH LEGIS & CO.ADVOCATES & CONSULTANTS

The firm

Arth Legis & Co. was founded in Jaipur to run disputes and advisory work from the same desk, without handing a file between teams as it moves.

Who we are

The firm takes its name from a pairing. Arth is substance; Legis is the law that gives it effect. Sanskrit and Latin, meaning and machinery — a client's commercial position on one side, and the procedure that either protects it or does not on the other. Most of what we do is the work of joining the two.

We are a small practice and intend to remain one. The counsel who takes your first call is the counsel who drafts the pleading and argues the matter. Nothing is passed down a chain, and nobody bills for reading themselves into a file that has already been read.

Where we appear

The firm's matters are presently before the High Courts of Rajasthan, Delhi and Telangana, before District and Commercial Courts in Rajasthan, and before tribunals including the National Company Law Tribunal, the Debts Recovery Tribunal, the real estate regulatory authorities and their appellate tribunals.

Outside our jurisdiction

Litigation in India is local, and pretending otherwise does clients no favours. Where a matter is listed somewhere we do not appear, we instruct associate counsel in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other jurisdictions. We remain on record for the client, settle the drafts, attend the important hearings and report on the rest. The client is not asked to manage a second set of lawyers.

Fees

Fees are agreed in writing at the outset and are set by reference to the nature of the work, the forum and the time the matter is likely to take. We use fixed fees for defined pieces of work, hourly rates for advisory work of uncertain scope, and per-appearance fees for hearings, or a combination.

We do not quote rates on this website, and we do not accept work on a contingent or share-of-outcome basis, which is not permitted to advocates in India.

Court fees, filing charges, travel, local counsel and other out-of-pocket expenses are billed at cost against supporting vouchers.

Confidentiality

Communications with an advocate for the purpose of professional advice are protected under Section 132 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. That protection attaches to the professional relationship, not to a first email — so please do not send confidential material before we have confirmed in writing that we are able to act.

How we work

Every engagement runs through the same five stages.

  1. Stage 1

    First contact

A short description of the matter and the documents you already hold. No charge, and no obligation on either side.

  2. Stage 2

    Conflict check

We check the parties before discussing anything substantive. If there is a conflict we say so at once and stop.

  3. Stage 3

    Engagement letter

Scope, counsel, fee basis and billing cycle are recorded and signed. No advocate–client relationship exists until then.

  4. Stage 4

    Conduct of the matter

Drafts are settled with you before filing, and each effective hearing is reported — not just the next date.

  5. Stage 5

    Closure and papers

Original documents returned, a complete set of the proceedings handed over, and surviving limitation dates recorded.
